A Homing Coming My Appreciation of the breed started 20 years ago when I met a dog named Aqua. He was a retired sled dog from a private school in Manitoba Canada. A friend of mine had adopted him and he was staying with another friend in the city. Aqua was old by Malamute standards (14 years) he was blind in one eye and carried the signs of years of sledding. One day we walked him downtown (approximately 3 miles) and tied him outside the mall while we went shopping. On leaving the mall we were shocked to find him gone! His leash had been untied and there was no sign of him. We franticly searched but found no clue. We returned home and proceeded to contact all the local shelters etc....We even had a radio station announce a plea. Two days past with out a sign of Aqua. It seemed as if he was gone for good. Then the unexplainable happened. The person that had been looking after him heard a noise at the back door and opened it to find Aqua standing there. Here was this 14 year old Malamute who had lived his whole life as a sled dog in another Province standing in his back yard. No explanation was ever found ?? We figured he was stolen and the person saw he was old and in less than prefect shape and let him go. This still doesn't explain how he found his way home ? I still marvel at the intelligence of Malamutes today. Ever since Aqua came into my life I knew Malamutes were the dog for me. I rescued Mika ( my first ) from a shelter a few years ago . We had many good years together until Epilepsy ended his time with me. I presently share my house with my second (Hunter) and am expecting a little brother for him soon. It looks as if Malamutes will be apart of my life for many years to come.
